The Downloads Folder Is an Intake Leak
An AI file sorter will not fix a downloads folder full of case documents. Count the six doors documents enter a firm through and name an owner per path.
Someone in r/LawFirm asked if anyone has tried an AI file sorter that plugs into Clio. The reason he gave, not the feature list, is the part worth reading:
"Really sick of files getting sent to a download folder and then people having to figure out where they go."
That is not a filing problem. That is an intake problem showing up at the end.
Count the doors documents come through at a small firm. Email attachments. The e-filing portal. Client texts and photos. Records vendors. The scanner by the copier. Opposing counsel's Dropbox link. Six paths in, one shared downloads folder as the default landing spot, and a human deciding case by case where each thing belongs.
An AI sorter guesses at the last step. It does nothing about the six doors.
The firms that fixed this did not buy better sorting. They named an owner per intake path and wrote down where each one terminates in the matter file. Boring. Takes an afternoon. Removes the guessing the AI was being hired to do.
Buy the sorter after that, if you still want it. It works far better on a system than in place of one.
Mapping intake paths is exactly the kind of afternoon job a Counterbench Paralegal Team sets up and then runs for you.
